Town to Participate in Florida Department of Children and Families Overdose Prevention Program
WHO:
The Town of Pembroke Park and the Florida Department of Children and Families
WHAT:
Overdose Prevention Program
WHY:
The issue of opioid addictions is something that has faced communities across South Florida, the state and nation for many years. In an effort to help reduce opioid deaths, the Florida Department of Children created the Overdose Prevention Program (OPP).
This program provides a free, FDA-approved emergency medication (NARCAN) used to reverse or reduce the effects of opioids to organizations that serve individuals at risk of witnessing or experiencing an overdose. The Town of Pembroke Park is proud to be participating as this is another tool at its disposal to help members of our community.
“Unfortunately, this epidemic isn’t restricted to one segment of our community, it effects everyone,” said Eric Morrissette, Town of Pembroke Park Acting Clerk Commissioner, District 1. “If by providing access to NARCAN we can help save one life, it will have been well worth the effort.”
This program provides free NARCAN Nasal Spray (a.k.a., naloxone), which is a proven way to reverse or reduce the effect of an opioid overdose. This DCF program was created to increase awareness of how to use NARCAN and where to get it.
At Pembroke Park, a self-service dispenser (box) will be located on the first floor of Town Hall, and free NARCAN will be accessible to those who need it during normal business hours.
“This was really a no-brainer, given our police officers have NARCAN in their vehicles, this is just the next step in helping our community,” said Morrissette. “Our officers are out and about serving the residents of Pembroke Park, and it just made sense to have NARCAN available at Town Hall as an extension of this practice, just in case.”
