Ashira Mohammed is your newly elected Mayor, she is an attorney, born and raised in Brooklyn New York.  She graduated from Kingsborough Community College with an Associates in Applied Science in accounting and data processing.  She attended Florida Atlantic University where she received her bachelor’s degree in International Business before attending St. Thomas University where she received her Juris Doctorate. 

She has a very diverse work history starting out of high school at Verizon as a central office technician. She followed in her families footsteps as both her mother and brother were 25+ year shop stewards; so naturally she became heavily involved with her local union CWA 1109, which actually contributed to her education as she was the recipient of the Joseph Anthony Beirnes scholarship. At an early age she learned the importance of fighting for the rights of others while balancing the needs of both employees and employers. She also learned the value of small businesses and business development. She worked for two years with National Minority Supplier Development Council an organization that helps match minority businesses with Fortune 500 companies.

During this time she decided to further her education and moved to Florida to complete her bachelor’s degree at Florida Atlantic University. While completing her studies she traveled to Costa Rica with school and visited the US consulate there and became interested in the important role that governments play on the developments of a community. She decided to run for office in her home town of Pembroke Park where she became the first minority and youngest female in the state to hold public office. She elevated through the ranks of Commissioner, Vice Mayor and Mayor and served the community for 17 years bridging the gave between government and the people. She worked with organizations like sister cities and various foreign chamber of commerce’s to bring businesses into the small town to make sure the town lived up to its motto of being the small town that means big business.

She worked on changing zoning regulations to allow for mixed use and commercial development and worked with various agencies to attract development in the Town.  She is forward thinking and have changed regulation to allow for the use of medical marijuana dispensary’ within the Town when so many cities were shying away from it.  Progressively, working with various staffers in the town to create and market shovel ready right. Collaborating with other elected officials on the numerous committees such as;  the National league of Cities, the Florida League of Cities and the Florida League of Mayors where she received numerous awards for working with those agencies.
